Travel to Elkader and FAA testing center required.)

This opportunity is part of the Iowa Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP), a state-funded initiative that helps young people gain real job experience in high-demand fields. Interns selected for the DroneXperts program will get paid to learn about drone technology, earn FAA credentials, and explore career paths in aviation, robotics, agriculture, and public safety.

Program Duration
6 weeks | June–July 2025
Schedule: 10 hours per week (typically 2–3 days/week)
Position Overview
The Drone Technology Internship is a paid opportunity designed to give students real-world experience in uncrewed aerial systems (UAS). Over 6 weeks, interns will explore drone operation, regulations, and industry applications—all while preparing to earn the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
This internship combines online learning, classroom instruction, and hands-on drone flight training, delivered by certified DroneXperts staff.
Key Expectations
Interns will be required to:
Attend scheduled in-person and virtual sessions
Participate in weekly online and classroom discussions
Complete assigned readings and short quizzes
Demonstrate safe and competent drone operations in the National Airspace System (NAS)
Prepare for and take the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Exam
Testing fee is paid for by DroneXperts
Students are responsible for their own transportation to the nearest FAA testing site
Learning Objectives
By the end of this internship, participants will:
Understand how drones are used in agriculture, public safety, media, and inspection
Become familiar with FAA regulations and safe flight procedures
Develop skills in drone operation, troubleshooting, and camera usage
Be eligible to receive their FAA Part 107 Certification
Gain insight into real careers in unmanned aviation, robotics, and GIS
Eligibility & Ideal Candidate
Ages 16–24 (Must meet Iowa SYIP eligibility and be at least 16 to qualify for the FAA exam)
Must be able to commit to 10 hours per week for 6 weeks
Interested in technology, aviation, photography, or hands-on learning
Willing to complete academic assignments as part of the internship
Reliable access to internet for online coursework
